Thomas "Tom"Capnerhurst, son of Mary (Hall)
and Joseph Capnerhurst, was born 10 Aug 1769, at
Lindley, Higham-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, England.
Thomas was trained as a millwright while he was
living in England. Tom was eighteen years old when
he emigrated to America with his mother, Mary (Hall)
Capner, sister Ann "Nancy", and brother
Joseph, in 1787. On the advice of his uncle, he
shortened his surname to Capner upon arrival in
America.
According to author James Snell, and the Capner
Letters, Thomas Capner did not settle at Flemington,
New Jersey, with his mother and sister, but rather
remained in Pennsylvania. He went into business
with Moses Hill, a prominent Pennsylvania Quaker,
an arrangement which may have been made by his
uncle, John Hall, during a previous trip to America.
Moses and Tom invested in a saw-mill located,
according to author Snell, "...on the banks
of the Wissahicksen..." with no nearby town
named.
For reasons not clear to me, Thomas Capner moved
to New Jersey some ten years later, and settled
in the Nottingham section of Trenton, about 20
miles south of Flemington.
Thomas Capner married Mary "Polly" Choyce,8
Apr 1800,at Flemington.Polly,daughter of Elizabeth
(Hall) and James Choyce was born in Leicestershire,
England, probably at Temple Hall, Sibson. Polly
was baptized 5 Jul 1776, in the Presbyterian Chapel
at Ather-stone, Warwick-shire, England. Details
concerning Polly's Choyce are reported earlier
in this chapter.
