CHRISTINA "CHRIS" (MULQUEENEY) HOLCROFT CHOICE, THEATRE NURSE, OF IRELAND AND LEICESTER

Christina Mulqueeney is the daughter of Mary (Gordon) and Stephen Mulqueeney who were both born in Limerick, Ireland. Christina, called Chris, was born 27 Nov 1914, at the NAAS Hospital, County Kildare, Eire.

Chris said that her father's name was spelled Mulqueen on his birth certificate, but he always used Mulqueeney. She added more family information in her letters of 2 Apr 1979, and 8 Nov 1982:

The Mulqueeney family had lived for generations in Limerick, Ireland, until the potato famine 1840....a lot of them left for the U.S.A. My great grandparents and grandparents had their own farms and butchery business until the troubles in 1918....My parents had...one son James, died 17 Mar 1970, aged 70 years.... daughters Mary and Elizabeth...dead. I am the only one left...My father was killed in 1st World War...

Christina first married Henry Holcroft, 12 Sep 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eldon Street, London. Henry Holcroft was a member of the Coldstream Guards. Together they had three children: Christine Ann Holcroft, born 14 Jul 1937; Ronald George Brian Holcroft, born 5 Oct 1941; and Michael Holcroft, born 28 Mar 1951. Henry Holcroft died 28 Jul 1956.

Christine Ann Holcroft is married to Donald Turner. Her mother said that Donald's family is not related to Florence (Turner) Choice's family.

Neither Ronald nor Michael Holcroft is married at this writing.

Chris (Mulqueeney) Choice is a Senior Nurse. During her last 20 years of employment, she worked as a "Theatre assistant." Chris was forced to retire in 1982 because of a disabling accident. She presently makes her home at Leicester surrounded by her three children and 11 grandchildren.

Addenda

In a note with her 1988 Christmas card, Chris told me that she was recovering from a hip replacement. She also noted that her former mother in law, Florence (Turner) Choice, had died in January of 1988, at the age of 84 years.

In answer to my inquiry, I received the following information from the British Commonwealth War Graves Commission. I believe this military death record pertains to John Choice, son of Amelia and Charles Choice:

27049 Pvt John CHOICE 7th Bn. Leicestershire Regt. D.O.W. 10 Nov 1916, age 27 Leicester (Gilroes) Cemetery, Leicestershire, Row F, Grave 982 UK 15

Son of Charles Choice of Sanvey Gate, Leicester, husband of Ada Healey (formerly Choice) of Leicester.

This information would strengthen the speculation that Ada Campodonice married John Choice and, after John's death, married Walter Healey.

No statistics have been verified concerning young John Choice, speculative son of Ada (Campodonice) and John Choice, but there is a record in the June 1946 quarter at St. Catherine's House, for a marriage at Leicester for John Choice and Gwendoline E. Bennett.

Birth Indexes at St. Catherine's house show a record of birth for Jacqueline M. Choice at Leicester, in the March 1947 quarter. Jacqueline's mother's maiden name was Bennett.

There is also a record at St. Catherine's House for a marriage of Jacqueline M. Choice to Jim Springthorpe in 1965, at Leicester.
