MARY ANN (TOOMEY/TWOMEY) AND JAMES PATRICK SHEEHAN, WOOL DYER, OF IRELAND AND LAWRENCE

James Patrick Sheehan, son of Julia (Buckley) and Patrick Sheehan, was possibly born in Nashua, New Hampshire, as he indicated on his marriage certificate; or he may have been born in Ireland, as recorded on his death certificate. James is not listed in the state-wide "New Hampshire Index of Births." Some family members think that James was born in County Cork, Ireland. However, his daughter, the late Mary Ellen Sheehan, when questioned in her declining years, said that she though that her father had been born on the boat taking the family from Ireland to America. She did not know the name of the ship but thought it had an "Italian sounding name.

Searches for documentation of their grandfather's birth by John "Jack" William Sheehan, and his sister, Madeline (Sheehan) Burke, have not produced any results. However, the information extracted from the birth certificates of his children, all place his birth in Ireland. Almost all of the documentation I have received on this Sheehan family, and the related Toomey family, has been collected by Madeline or Jack.

MARY ANN (TWOMEY) SHEEHAN

James Patrick Sheehan married Mary Ann Toomey, according to their marriage certificate, on 28 Oct 1877, at Lawrence. They were married in the Immaculate Conception Church by the Reverend D.D.Regan,O.S.A. Witnesses names were transcribed as James Quane (Crane, perhaps?) and Bridget McQuade.

JULIA (CRANE) AND CORNELIUS TOOMEY/TWOMEY, GARDNER, OF IRELAND AND LAWRENCE

Julia (Crane) and Cornelius Toomey are the parents of Mary Ann Toomey of Lawrence.

A search of the Lawrence Town Hall Clerk of Records Office,by Madeline (Sheehan) Burke, produced a marriage record for Mary Ann's parents: Julia Crane, age 23, married Cornelius Twomey, age 40, 8 Mar 1868, at Lawrence. Julia was the daughter of Margaret and Timothy Crane. Cornelius was the son of Margaret and Henry Twomey. It was the first marriage for Julia and the second for Cornelius (which could indicate there are children from Cornelius's first marriage of whom we know nothing.) According to the marriage record, both Julia and Cornelius were born in Ireland. Officiating at the wedding was the Reverend C.T. McGrath, a Roman Catholic priest. No record of Cornelius's prior marriage was found in Lawrence.

On the religious certificate of marriage, Julia's name was spelled "Creehan", and Cornelius's name was spelled "Toomey". Witnesses were Thomas Toomey and Ann Toomey.

I have no record of children, other than Mary Ann, for Julia and Cornelius. Julia (Crane) Toomey died before Cornelius, but Madeline could find no record of her death in Lawrence. Cornelius, with his surname spelled Twomey, was recorded as a widower when he died.
