Hattie (Choice) Schroder is the (HCS)
which is liberally sprinkled throughout this chapter.
Hattie spent many years conducting genealogical
research on her family. Her daughter, Harriet Choice
(Schroder) Earle, who uses her middle name, Choice,
was good enough to forward her mother's notes to
me for inclusion here. Choice wrote, in a letter
dated 13 Dec 1978:
...was very pleased to know someone is checking
up on the Choices after all these years. My mother
did a good bit of genealogical research when she
retired and had time to gather information. She
looked on it like a good mystery novel - putting
all the pieces together. Some of her information
is incorrect, since she did not go to Virginia or
England to look it up, but she did get a lot of
information
...we do not have any English records, in fact,
her records show the family came from Wales. I don't
know where she got that information. Our line has
ceased since her mother had one brother who had
two sons, William and Jefferson, and neither one
of them has a son.
Choice did not say how her mother was employed.
It will be noted, as with most genealogical researchers,
information on their immediate family is often unrecorded,
probably because they already know all of that information.
Consequently, Hattie's statistics are sketchy in
places. Pity. The statistics I have on hand are
now over 25 years old, so there would be much new
data which will not show on my charts here.
In a quick aside to Choice's remark about the Welsh
origins of Choices, I have found nothing to substantiate
that claim. On the contrary, it appears that there
is a dearth of Choices in Wales except for those
few Englishmen who married there.

JANE "GINNY" (HAYGOOD) AND JOHN CHOICE,
OF LOUISA COUNTY, AND FRANKLIN COUNTY
John Choice, son of Ann (Duff?) and Tully
Choice, Sr., was born about 1757 in Louisa County,
Virginia (LBJ).
This segment is rife with speculation. Take nothing
I present for this early family as factual. Each
statistic must be proved. John Choice married
Jane Haygood in February of 1805, in Franklin
County, Virginia. John Cook payed their surety.
Jane has been identified variously as "Ginny"
and "Jinny". I am not able to offer
proof that the John Choice who married Jane Haygood,
is the same John Choice who was the son of Tully
Choice, Sr.
I have no information concerning Jane's parentage,
or place of birth. However, there was a man named
Haygood who served as Governor of South Carolina
sometime before 1899. There is also a small book
entitled: MEET YOUR GRANDFATHER: A SKETCH-BOOK
OF THE HAGOOD-TOBIN FAMILY (see Bibliography),
which may prove helpful.
Jane (Haygood) and John Choice had four (or five?)
children, all born in Virginia: Tully Choice born
about 1806; Gresham, 1808; Elizabeth; John H.;
and Franklin Choice (?) born about 1820.
Again, I am speculating that these children belong
with these parents. My speculation is based on
the will of John Choice, written 11 Jul 1821,
in Franklin County, Virginia. He names his wife
as Jane, and four children, Tully, Gresham, Elizabeth
and John H. Choice. I have speculatively added
a fifth child, Franklin Choice, for reasons I
will explain as we progress.
John Choice who wrote the will, died the same
day he wrote it, 11 Jul 1821. I have death records
for him from two sources with that date. John
began his will with the words, "I John Choice
of the County of Franklin and State of Virginia
being sick of body but of disposing mind and memory...."
Although it is not common for a person to write
his will on his deathbed, it was not unheard of
either.
It is important to be alerted to the fact that
there were other Choice families living in Franklin
County, Virginia, during the same time period
Jane (Haygood) and John Choice lived there. I
have not been able to isolate them. I have relied
heavily on the extensive research conducted by
Gertrude (Casler) Mann (GCM), of Franklin and
later, Rocky Mount, Virginia (she is now deceased).
Some of those Choices, whom I have not been able
to identify include John W. Choice, Head of Household,
age 31, found in the 1850 U.S.Census for Franklin
County, Virginia (GCM). In the same household
is Julia Choice, wife, age 23, and Mary Choice,
daughter, age 4. That middle initial for John
distinguishes him from other John Choices, but
does not match him to any I have on hand.
There is also a marriage in Franklin County, Virginia,
for a Jane Choice and Miles Bottom, 3 Jun 1823
(GCM). Their surety was paid by Silas Choice and
Jno. Doughton. Could Silas have been Cyrus (brother
of John Choice)? Was this Jane Choice the widow
of John Choice who wrote the will in 1821? If
she is the same person, perhaps the marriage was
of short duration. There is also a record of marriage
in Franklin County, Virginia, for a Jno Lacy and
Jane Choice who married 4 Oct 1824, with their
surety paid by Armistead Gorman (GCM).
If Jane, widow of John Choice, did marry Miles
Bottom, and later married John Lacy, why wasn't
she identified as Jane Bottom? If John's widow,
Jane, had not married Miles Bottom, who was the
second Jane Choice? If there were two Janes who
married two different John Choices, I could have
these families all mixed up.
