PATTI CHOICE ?

Born about 1876, in Missouri
JOHN CHOICE ?
Son of E. and Franklin Choice.
Born about 1875, in Missouri
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eventually, Martha E. (Copeland) and Franklin Choice had eight children. Their first four children were born in Virginia. They were: William Franklin Choice, born in 1848; Mary A.,1850; Augusta M., 1853; and Laura V. Choice, in 1857. Their fifth child, Charles Choice may have been born either in Virginia, or Missouri, or during the 600-odd mile journey west. I don't know whether Charles survived childhood or not. The last three children were born after the family arrived in Missouri, probably in St. Clair County: Martha Jane "Matti" Choice, born in 1865; Louisa F.,1867; and Anna E. "Nannie" Choice, born in 1870.

Researcher, Mr. John Mills, was good enough to conduct some research on my behalf at the St.Clair County Library, Osceola, Missouri, 64776. He forwarded information taken from the 1860 U.S.Census which show Martha and Franklin Choice living in Washington Township, St. Clair County. Franklin gave his age as 34 years, which, again, would have put his date of birth about 1826, long after John Choice presumably died.

Martha's age was given as 26 years, which would put her date of birth about 1834, making her five years younger than information offered in the 1850 Census. In the 1860 Census, the only children enumerated were William F., Mary A., Augusta M., and Laura V. Choice. This could indicate that Charles did not survive.

Mr. Mills said he found no Choice family in the 1870 U.S. Census for Washington Township. I did not ask him to search further. I did write to the State Historical Society of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, 65201, and obtained copies of the 1880 U.S. Census for Collins Township, St. Clair County. That Census shows Franklin Choice, age 54, widower, farmer, living with four of his children: Marthy J., age 15; Louisa F., age 13; Annie E., age 10, and son John, age 5.

Again, Franklin's age of 54 in 1880, would place his birth in 1826, same as in earlier Census records. He and both his parents were all born in Virginia.
